Traditional Method
Rolls a ball down a calibrated ramp and measures how far it travels. Farther roll, faster green. Accurate, but it's a groundskeeper's tool, not something you use before a round.

Align is a free photography app on the App Store. It asks you to take photos that match a shape on screen, using a live overlay to line up similar forms around you. Once you’ve collected enough images, the app compiles them into a video. The more carefully you align each shot, the better it looks, and after a while you start noticing repeating patterns you would have walked past.

Breadcrumbs is a 3D-printed map of State College, PA with LEDs that light up from location data. A companion app talks to an ESP32 and maps my current position to a specific LED. As I move through the day, a glowing trail shows where I’ve been. If you know the town, you can read the lights as a picture of my day.

CUES is a two-person interactive installation. One person stands inside a triangular structure facing a projection, while the other stands outside and talks them through placing their hands on specific illuminated spots. Kinect tracking detects when they get aligned, then the piece responds with visuals and sound. It only works if they actually listen to each other.

Dialed gives golfers a faster way to get comfortable on unfamiliar greens before the round starts. Using your phone’s camera and a compact folding stand, it analyzes a real putt and turns the roll into a personalized read on speed, feel, and pace, based on both today’s conditions and past sessions.
The Green Speed Problem

Uses your phone's camera to analyze real putts and give you a read on today's green speed compared to greens you've already played.
The Stand
Tracking a ball needs the camera low and at a consistent angle, something a phone lying in the grass can't do. The stand holds that angle, prints as one hinged piece, folds flat into a bag pocket, and opens in seconds. The putter is the controller
After a putt, the putter becomes the controller. You mark how far the ball finished from the hole by moving it through the stand's camera view, so the input happens where your hands already are. The phone stays on the ground and the round keeps moving. The camera and the screen are on opposite sides of the phone, so I needed the screen facing me and the camera facing the ball. Gen 1 mounts the phone upside down and uses a mirror to give the camera a view of the ball. The mirror hands the camera its view of the ball while the screen stays facing up, readable from standing height. Gen 2
Gen 1 proved the geometry worked, and it was also far too bulky to bring anywhere. Gen 2 kept the optics identical and added a scissor mechanism so the whole thing could collapse into a bag pocket. The blueprint as a first CAD model. Frame geometry was locked; the hinges were still guesswork.

Build process

Gen 3 comes off the print bed as one working hinged piece. No screws, no glue, no assembly step. That's the difference between handing someone a stand and handing them a kit. Designing the App
Proposal
Made before the app existed, to make Dialed look like a real product instead of an idea.
Setup tutorial
An After Effects prototype of a setup tutorial, walking through distance and slope calibration before a round. The AR measurement flow carried into the shipped app. Slope calibration was left behind; it was too complex to keep in the on-course experience.
Golfer POV
Set the stand in front of you and stay standing over the putt. When the app needs input, your putter is the controller. No bending down to tap the phone.
